Affiliate Marketing is the business association between someone who owns a product and offers a commission to someone who sells it for them.
Affiliate marketing is not new. If you look at it based upon the definition above, you will understand that just about anything sold anywhere whether online or in your local retail outlet is a form of affiliate marketing.
It’s simply selling other folk’s stuff and making a commission.
The General Store
Let’s think back to Little House on the Prairie and Olsen’s Mercantile. Oleson’s Mercantile was the store owned and operated by Harriet and Nels Oleson.
Mr. Olsen was the affiliate marketing dude of Walnut Grove. The mercantile was the only general merchandise store in town. Inventory included everything from fabrics and lanterns to children’s toys and candy.
This was an early example of affiliate marketing so you can see, it is not new and it certainly is a viable business. Whether you own a brick and mortar general store or have an online web store, you are an affiliate marketer.
Affiliate Marketing or Not
I’m sure you have read lots of articles on affiliate marketing and may have some mixed thoughts on trying your hand at this business model.
One thing is for certain, if you don’t try it, someday you will be reading an article that turns your light on and you will ask yourself why you didn’t try it years ago.
So what do you think? Should you try affiliate marketing or not? You will have to answer that for yourself but I would like to know what you think. Let me know in the space below.
