Does Your Garbage Disposal Stink

What is that awfull smell coming from the kitchen? Could it be your garbage disposal stinks?

Ah the kitchen garbage disposal, the workhorse appliance, that wonderous invention that chews and grinds up all those left overs and then they get washed down the drain. Problem is, not all the gunk gets washed away.

If you have never looked down in your garbage disposal then you wouldn’t know what gets left sitting in the bottom and in the drain trap. Bits of ground up food can sit in the trap and start clinging to the sides as it dries overnight. If not fully flushed then over time this will really start to stink and there’s nothing worse in a kitchen than a nasty smelling kitchen garbage disposal.

So how do you clean it out? First you need to be sure that after each time you use it you let the water run for several seconds. While the water is running down into the garbage disposal turn it on for about 5 seconds and continue runnning the water for a few more seconds after you turn it off. This will help wash the bits of chewed up food and stuff down the drain.

Then about once each week you should pour a liquid enzyme product
designed for drain cleaning into your garbage disposal. The way this works is that the enzyme is a live organism that will eat odor causing bacteria thus elminating the source of fowl odors. Use these type products at night after you have finished the dishes, including running the dishwasher. This will allow the enzyme product to do it’s job.

By following these simple tips your kitchen garbage disposal shoud never stink and always be ready to do it’s job. Just be sure to use the liquid enzyme product as this is the best way to prevent further build up of all the gunk.
